An e-mail address is always linked to your domain name. This does not mean that you can use mydomainname.be to generate e-mail addresses such as luc@mydomainname.be or info@mydomainname.be, which of course you can. It means that an e-mail address for you as a registrant is stored in our database. This is the e-mail address that can be used to contact you for everything to do with the management of your domain name.
What do we use this e-mail address for?
Although we no longer show contact details, including an e-mail address, of a registrant through our WHOIS tool, we use your e-mail address to:
- Send you the transfer code when your domain name is moved/transferred to another party/registrar
- Announce significant updates of the general terms and conditions
- Inform you that the registrar who manages your domain name has gone bankrupt
- Provide you with requests from a third party about your domain name, e.g. when such a party is interested in buying your domain name, etc. A third party cannot contact you directly for such matters, but can contact you via a contact form that we send to your e-mail address.
Avoid possible conflicts
All communication therefore goes to the e-mail address that you provided when you registered your domain name. So make sure that the e-mail address works and that the messages reach you (and not a web designer, for instance).
When an organisation uses the e-mail address of the web master, for instance, all communication about the domain name winds up in his personal mailbox.
This is no problem as long as that person continues to work at the organisation. But when that is no longer the case, your organisation can no longer be reached for communication about your domain name. The use of a personal e-mail address can lead to conflicts between the partners of a company as to who is the actual owner of a domain name. It is therefore best to take all such matters into consideration when you register a domain name.
